The city of Abashiri is home to 40,000 and is the staging area for one of Hokkaido’s most interesting winter experiences. Watch from the deck as drift ice formed on the Okhotsk Sea is crumpled up mercilessly on one of the popular ice breaker tours which operate mid January to early April from Abashiri Port. Cruises take about one hour and cost 3000 Yen per person.
As well as the winter months, Abashiri attracts visitors during all other seasons as well.
