Noboribetsu is Hokkaido's most famous hot spring resort, beautifully surrounded by forested hills. Noboribetsu's major attraction besides its hot spring baths featuring over 10 different kinds of water is the Jigokudani or "Hell Valley", where you can view (and smell) sulphurous steam vents, streams and ponds. Noboribetsu is easily accessible by car however train services also operate out of Minami-Chitose station.
Sights
Jigokudani Valley (Hell Valley) Located just a few minutes walk from the central spa area of Noboribetsu, Jigokudani Valley is a 450 meter in diameter volcano mouth producing over 3,000 litres of hot water per day. Hot water, steam clouds and sulphuric volcanic gas rise from the surface giving off an impression of hell, hence the name Hell Valley.
Noboribetsu Sakuranamiki (Cherry Blossom Lane) Visitors in Spring can enjoy and view the endless rows of cherry trees running from Noboribetsu station to the hot spring area. Cherry Blossom can also be viewed at Sakuragaoka (Cherry Blossom Hill) in Karurusu.
Natural Foot Bath Located along the Oyunuma River sightseeing trail, relax amongst nature whilst trying a natural foot bath in the hot spring water.
Taisho Jigoku This hot spring marsh formed in the early 1900's is well known as a mysterious geyser which changes color depending on the water levels and also makes a strange rumble when the water level decreases.
Noboribetsu Date Jidai Mura (Historical Village) This popular theme park gives visitors an insight to Japan in the Edo era (1603-1867). The park feautures a high definition Ninja Theatre where you can enjoy the famous and fierce battles of the ninja, a "Showcase of Monsters", traditional and cultural theater, an insight into the samurai warrior and more with over 94 buildings representing an authentic reproduction of this facinating period.
Noboribetsu Bear Park With a mountain top location accessed by ropeway from the centre of Noboribetsu, the Noboribetsu Bear Park features approximately 140 brown bears including some that ride bicycles and perform for guests to enjoy. The park also feautures the "Yukara Village" showing a re-creation of the Ainu people and also houses one of the only Brown Bear museum in the world.
Noboribetsu Marine Park Nixe This modern style marine park features a magnificent aquarium where marine life of all kinds including sharks and salmon swim directly above visitors, dolphin and sea lion shows and a parade of penguins. The centrepiece of the park "Nixe Castle" is modelled after a real ancient Danish castle.
Gokuraku Street (Shopping Area) Lined with many souvenier shops and an abundance of statues relating to hell and demons, Gokuraku street is a must see for all visitors to Noboribetsu.
