Known as the "city of mist" Kushiro is sthe largest city of Eastern Hokkaido. A thriving port in the early 20th century, Kushiro still retains many of its original features from this era when the city was a thriving port for marine products of all kinds.
Fishermans Wharf is the place to go to enjoy a delicious meal and also contains many specialty shops. To the north of the city lies Japan's largest marshland, Kushiro Marsh. Here you will find Kushiro Tancho Nature Park which is well known as the first artificial breeding of Japanese cranes. The cranes are designated as national monuments and can be seen all year round.
